In Art and Design this half term, we have been practising our observational sketching skills. To kickstart our art and design journey, we researched King Henry's commissioned portrait artist, Hans Holbein the Younger. In the next session, we selected our chosen Tudor figure and practised sketching different facial body parts and learned some useful techniques. We then put all that we had learned into practice, and created our final piece.

In science, Year 5 are currently learning about the properties and changes of materials. We have been assigned as festival organisers, and part of this role has led us to conduct several experiments. The first, involved us carrying out a scratch test on different materials, to see which material would act as the best chopping board. We wanted to ensure our food was hygienically prepared, so the chopping board with the least scratches to harbour bacteria was found to be the best. We then conducted an experiment into which type of material would act as a good conductor to keep drinks warm. We measured the temperature of boiling water in intervals for 10 minutes to test which remained the hottest. Our recent experiment, has involved testing paper strength to check which would be strongest to hold take away food. We added marbles to a yoghurt pot attached to different types of paper, to see which would hold the most marbles before ripping. We will continue to carry out experiments, to test materials and learn more about their properties.

We had the opportunity to handle some Tudor replica items, to support us in our learning of what life was like during the Tudor era. First, we observed and handled the artefacts and predicted what each item was, who may have used it and what its purpose was, before learning the factual information. We commented on how in today’s world, there is no need for some of the objects, such as pomanders and pattens.

Class Trip to Hampton Court Palace 8th Oct 2024

Year 5 were extremely fortunate to visit Henry VIII’s palace, Hampton Court. Whilst there, we were able to experience first-hand what it felt like to walk the cobbled pathways of this magnificent Tudor palace. We were welcomed by Lady Isabella, who led both of our workshops. The first, provided us with the opportunity to observe and handle primary sources of evidence, whilst investigating a key question linked to Henry VIII. The second workshop helped immerse us in the life of people who worked within the palace walls. It was a fantastic trip and was a great hook to lead us into learning more about the Tudor dynasty.
