This half term, Year 1 have had the fantastic opportunity to work with Artworx on the Earth, Art and Music Project. In an increasingly digital world dominated by screens and technology, the Earth, Art and Music Project has inspired children to get out into nature, learning new visual art skills, ‘natural art’ and music. It has taught children about the importance of recycling and looking after the environment, and used this learning to create artwork from natural materials gathered from the environment and also recycled materials that would have otherwise been discarded.

As part of our historical enquiry into the life of Grace Darling, we lived like the Darling Family for the day. The girls spent the afternoon baking for everyone and cleaning the lighthouse. The boys travelled far and wide for food and water, as well as cleaning the boat! The children experienced key differences between their lives today and the lives of Victorian Children.

During Spring 1, the children have been focusing on the book 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'. They wrote informative and detailed instructions, for Mrs Grinling, about how to make a great sandwich. We sampled our creations - of course - and sent our instructions to the little, white cottage on the cliffs.

To help us understand the Liturgical Calender, we celebrated Shrove Tuesday. We discussed the origins of this day and how it is always the day before Ash Wednesday (the start of Lent). This created great opportunities to talk about size, shapes, halves and quarters, too. Yummy!

One of our focus books during this term was 'The Gingerbread Man’ The children really got involved with this story and could retell it to their friends. They acted out the story, drew pictures of the gingerbread man, printed onto gingerbread men templates and made their own gingerbread men to eat at snack time!

One of our focus books during this term was 'The Colour Monster’. The children explored their emotions and talked about what made them feel each emotion. They used the resources on the emotions table, learned a song about the Colour Monster, made a display in the book corner and sat in our calm area with the Colour Monster cuddly toys.

During snack time, the children tried different foods including rice, noodles and prawn crackers. They also used paint to change the colour of rice, let it dry and then played with the rice using containers, chopsticks, bowls etc. The children danced around pre-school with the Chinese dragon whilst music was being played. They put their heads inside the dragon’s head, made lanterns, coloured pictures, made red envelopes, listened to stories and watched video clips about Lunar New Year.

The children enjoyed doing lots of mark making this term. They took part in 'Scribble Club' creating lots of lovely marks on the paper with pens, pencils, crayons and chalks. The children talked about their marks and used their imaginations to share what was happening on the paper. They printed with a range of resources and made maps to go looking for treasure!

The staff and children have had so much fun during the last few weeks of the autumn term. They decorated the pre-school and put the Christmas tree up. They made paper chains, reindeers, Christmas playdough and much more! The children learned new songs and rhymes and a poem about a snowman. We held a Christmas party and played party games such as musical statues and musical chairs. The children made a sleigh out of the wooden blocks and travelled around the world!

On Friday, we conducted a short historical enquiry based on the question 'Have toys changed over time?'. The children brought in their modern day toys and explored these. We thought about how they felt, what material they were made from and how they were used. We then compared these to a variety of toys from the past. The children were very interested to learn most toys, in the past, were made from wood or metal but nowadays, most toys are made from plastic.
