Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed our first forest school session- especially the warming hot chocolate and toast with such cold weather. We learnt about how different material can be used to build the frame of a den. We then used branches and leaves to create our safe home.

The staff and children have had so much fun during the last few weeks of the autumn term. They decorated the pre-school and put the Christmas tree up. They made paper chains, reindeers, Christmas playdough and much more! The children learned new songs and rhymes and a poem about a snowman. We held a Christmas party and played party games such as musical statues and musical chairs. The children made a sleigh out of the wooden blocks and travelled around the world!

On Friday, we conducted a short historical enquiry based on the question 'Have toys changed over time?'. The children brought in their modern day toys and explored these. We thought about how they felt, what material they were made from and how they were used. We then compared these to a variety of toys from the past. The children were very interested to learn most toys, in the past, were made from wood or metal but nowadays, most toys are made from plastic.

After reading 'The Gingerbread Man', Year 1 decided they wanted to help the Gingerbread Man cross the river. Using our knowledge surrounding materials, we knew we had to make him waterproof. The children conducted an investigation to find out which materials were waterproof and which were not. As a class, we concluded which materials the Gingerbread Man should wear across the river.

In our Geography enquiry, we are currently investigating if national parks are important within the UK. We used Digimaps to compare the New Forest to Fareham and used our knowledge of symbols to tell us more information about the geography of both areas. Following on from this, we put together a questionnaire for our parents to complete, in order to gather data. This will help us to answer our enquiry question. We are currently researching a national park within the UK and looking at what tourism it brings in and how it attracts and protects wildlife.

In art and design, we were inspired by King Henry’s official portrait artist, Hans Holbein the Younger, and sketched our own portraits of notable Tudor figures. We researched Hans Holbein and created an artist page all about him. Following this, we practised using different mark making techniques to show shadow and direction of light hitting features of the face. We also spent time considering scale and proportion, to ensure that the facial features for our final piece was accurate. We were given a selection of Tudor figures to choose from, some of us chose King Henry himself, others chose one of his wives, whilst some of us chose the famous playwright, Shakespeare! We are very pleased with how our Tudor portraits turned out, and each completed a reflection.

To celebrate our artwork, we displayed our self-portraits in an exhibition and invited our family members. Our self-portraits were inspired by the artist Chuck Close. He typically started with a photograph and used a grid on the photo to help him with proportion and scale. We used the same process to support us with accuracy or proportion and scale.

In design and technology this half term, Year 5 designed a Tudor menu and cooked/baked all dishes to enjoy at a Tudor banquet. We started our journey of learning by researching seasonal produce and the importance of using it. We also learned about the origin of our food, and identifying whether it was grown, reared, caught or processed. We then researched a typical Tudor menu at Hampton Court to inspire our own choices of dishes. We adapted the dishes to ensure they all used seasonal produce. We enjoyed trying all the food we had made and completed an evaluation for each dish.

As part of our imersion in to the traditional tale, The Gingerbread man, the children became bakers and over 3 days, all children prepared the gingerbread dough, rolled and cut their gingerbread men, baked and decorated them...then of course, they taste tested them!

During RE, the children have been learning about the different places of worship people go to to celebrate their faiths. In preparation for attending our first school Mass during Advent, Canon John hosted us for a visit at St Philip Howard Catholic Church. We were able to explore the church and learn about God's house, listen to some music and listen to Canon John talk to us about the Mass and the different jobs people have during the celebration. Some of us even got to Role play as a priest, alter server and reader. We were even treated to a biscuit and a drink in the hall like the parishioners get to do after Sunday Mass.

The children have been enjoying lots of outdoor play in the pre-school playground. They have used the bikes and scooters and practised their balancing skills. We bought some new spinning boards that the children had lots of fun with. They have also been skipping, playing in our giant sandpit and transporting lots of resources in different ways such as using the wheelbarrow. The children also used the tool box to 'fix' the bikes and played in the snow!

World Nursery Rhyme Week - Pre-School and School 15th Nov 2024

Each day of 'World Nursery Rhyme Week', the pre-school and reception children met to sing songs and rhymes together. They learned some new British Sign Language signs to use whilst singing. On the Friday, we had a 'dress up' day when the children and teachers dressed up as their favourite characters. The children were sponsored by family and friends to see how many rhymes they could sing in ten minutes. They had snack together and then played outside. It was a wonderful week!

What a wonderful day Year 2 ! First we discovered a mysterious bag filled with the belongings of the legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton, the whole class then took a step into his world. Together, we will constructed the majestic Endurance ship using cardboard boxes, nets, and colorful props, filling the entire classroom! Each child adopted a real character, interviewed for their role on deck, and selected a prop that would bring their job to life. With music, movement, and performance, we immersed ourselves in the thrilling journey aboard the Endurance, sailing toward Antarctica. As we ventured through this dramatic experience, the children discovered fascinating facts about Shackleton, his crew and dogs, the harsh Antarctic climate, and the power of positivity and teamwork in overcoming any challenge!
