Computing
Intent
The computing curriculum at St Jude’s will equip the children with the knowledge and skills needed to be active participants in the ever-changing digital world. Technology is everywhere and will play a pivotal part in children’s lives. Therefore, we want to model and educate our pupils on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely. Our computing curriculum focuses on a progression of skills in digital literacy, computer science, information technology and e-safety. Whilst teaching is taught discreetly, we will also give the children opportunities to embed the computing skills they have learnt, in other areas of the curriculum. We recognise that technology can allow pupils to share their learning in creative ways. We also understand the accessibility opportunities technology can provide for our pupils. Our knowledge rich curriculum has to be balanced with the opportunity for pupils to apply their knowledge creatively which will in turn help our pupils become skilful computer scientists.
Implementation
Our scheme of work for Computing is taken from the Purple Mash Curriculum and covers all aspects of the National Curriculum.
The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:
- can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
- can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
- can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
- are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and
- communication technology.
Impact
When pupils leave St Jude’s, they will be competent and safe users of technology who have a good understanding of how technology works. They will be equipped with the skills needed to progress in an ever-changing digital world, understanding and recognising how to stay safe online when using the internet.
